2026 Declared the Era of the Frog Game.
My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Given that a collection of frogs is called an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.
A Legacy of Leaping
Amphibians have been far from new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. Yet, their prevalence has seemingly surged in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are bona fide titles centered on frogs.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To grasp this rise, I performed a thorough analysis into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The findings tell a compelling story: a steady uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat visible elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the trend in gaming looks especially pronounced.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
In my opinion, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs offer natural appealing traits for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and grappling abilities lend themselves to a host of creative gameplay ideas.
A number of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year yet.
If these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we might just be witnessing a true croaking cultural moment.
