World Health Organization Faces Major Workforce Cuts After United States Funding Withdrawal

The international health organization revealed plans to reduce its staff by nearly a quarter – amounting to more than two thousand positions – by the middle of 2026.

Financial Shortfall Prompts Major Restructuring

The decision follows following the US, formerly the organization's largest donor, pulled out funding previously this year.

The US government had been responsible for about 18% of the organization's overall budget, causing a significant financial gap.

Projected Workforce Cuts

Based on organizational estimates, the workforce is expected to drop from 9,401 positions in early 2025 to approximately 7,030 by mid-2026.

This decrease of 2,371 positions comprises staff reductions, employees retiring, and natural departures.

"The past year has been among the toughest in our history, while we undertook a painful but necessary journey of prioritization and realignment," commented the agency's leader.

Financial Gap Remains

This Switzerland-headquartered body currently faces a budget shortfall of 1.06 billion dollars for the upcoming period, representing almost a quarter of its total funding.

This figure represents an improvement from a prior projected shortfall of 1.7 billion dollars reported in May.

Excluded Finances

These financial calculations do not include an additional 1.1 billion dollars in potential funding from ongoing negotiations with multiple contributors.

A spokesperson for the agency stated that the present unsecured portion of the biennial budget is actually lower than in previous periods, crediting this to several reasons:

  • Reduced total budget size
  • The launch of a fresh fundraising campaign
  • An increase in member states' required fees

This realignment process is currently approaching its completion, allowing the organization to move forward with a reshaped structure.
